Gordie Howe goals

Gordie Howe's Goals per Arena

It goes without saying that Gordie Howe was one of the greatest players in the history of the NHL. Over 26 seasons, from 1946-47 to 1970-71 with the Detroit Red Wings and 1979-80 with the Hartford Whalers, he scored 801 regular-season goals. He second only to Wayne Gretzky in number of goals scored.

Where did he score all those goals? Here is a breakdown of the goals he scored at each NHL arena. He scored in 21 different arenas, playing for Detroit and Hartford, and against 14 opponents. The list does not include goals scored while playing for the Houston Aeros or New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association.

Howe was by far the highest scoring player at Olympia Stadium, the home arena of the Detroit Red Wings from 1927 to 1979. The next highest scorer at Olympia was Alex Delvecchio, who scored an impressive but far fewer 245 goals.

Howe scored at Olympia in his first game as a Red Wing, against Toronto, on October 16, 1946. All of his goals in Detroit were scored while playing with the Red Wings - by the time the Whalers made their first trip to Detroit, the Red Wings had moved into Joe Louis Arena, and Howe never scored there. His last goal, number 801, came against Detroit in his final game, in Hartford on April 6, 1980.

Most of his away goals were against the other Original Six teams, the only other teams in the league for the first 21 seasons of his career. He was most successful at Chicago Stadium, where he scored 73 goals with Detroit, and another 3 with Hartford. He scored 65 at Boston Garden, 59 at the Montreal Forum, 56 at the original Madison Square Garden, and 54 at Maple Leaf Gardens, the site of his first away goal in 1947.

He also scored 4 goals against the Chicago Blackhawks at Chicago's home games elsewhere in the Midwest in the early 1950s. He scored 2 at St. Louis Arena, 1 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, and 1 at Ak-Sar-Ben Coliseum in Omaha, Nebraska.

In the expansion era, he scored 6 times at Los Angeles' Great Western Forum. The Kings also played home games at Long Beach Arena and the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena early in the 1967 season. Howe scored one goal at the Memorial Sports Arena. He scored 5 at Pittsburgh's Civic Arena, and another 4 at St. Louis Arena against the Blues. Five of his goals came at the current Madison Square Garden, and another 5 each at Minnesota's Met Center and the Spectrum in Philadelphia.

During Hartford’s first NHL season in 1979-80, the Whalers played some of their home games at the Springfield Civic Center. The roof of the Hartford Civic Center had collapsed during the 1977-78 WHA season, and the arena was under repair until January, 1980. Of his 15 goals with Hartford, Howe scored 4 goals at each arena. Another 4 came against the Seals at Oakland Coliseum.

He scored one goal each at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, Capital Centre (his final NHL goal on the road, in 1979), and McNichols Sports Arena against the Colorado Rockies.

Howe never scored 50 goals in a season, although he came close with 49 in 1952-53. He led the league in goals only five times: 1950-51, 1951-52, 1952-53, 1956-57, and 1962-63. However, he did led the Red Wings in goals 15 times: 11 seasons in a row from 1949-50 to 1959-60, another 3 seasons from 1961-62 to 1963-64, and 1967-68.

Brothers scoring on brothers

There are four cases in the NHL where a brother scored against a brother who was playing in goal for the opposing team: Paul and Tiny Thompson, Brian and Gary Smith, Phil and Tony Esposito, and Mathieu and Martin Biron.

Paul and Tiny Thompson

Paul Thompson was the first player to score on his brother, Cecil "Tiny" Thompson. Paul played for the New York Rangers from 1926/26 to 1930/31, and the Chicago Blackhawks from 1931/32 to 1938/39. Tiny played for the Boston Bruins from 1928/29 to 1938/39, then the Detroit Red Wings from 1938/39 to 1939/40.

Paul scored on Tiny 13 times:

  • March 18, 1930 - New York Rangers 2 @ Boston Bruins 9
  • March 20, 1932 - Boston Bruins 0 @ Chicago Blackhawks 1
  • November 22, 1932 - Chicago Blackhawks 1 @ Boston Bruins 5
  • January 31, 1933 - Chicago Blackhawks 5 @ Boston Bruins 1
  • December 23, 1933 - Chicago Blackhawks 3 @ Boston Bruins 1
  • January 5, 1935 - Chicago Blackhawks 6 @ Boston Bruins 0 (2 goals)
  • February 13, 1937 - Boston Bruins 2 @ Chicago Blackhawks 1
  • March 2, 1937 - Chicago Blackhawks 4 @ Boston Bruins 2
  • December 21, 1937 - Chicago Blackhawks 1 @ Boston Bruins 2
  • January 23, 1938 - Boston Bruins 2 @ Chicago Blackhawks 3
  • February 6, 1938 - Boston Bruins 7 @ Chicago Blackhawks 2
  • March 3, 1938 - Boston Bruins 2 @ Chicago Blackhawks 3
Eight of these goals were scored at Boston Garden. The other five were scored at Chicago Stadium.

Brian and Gary Smith

Brian Smith played two seasons in the NHL, with the Los Angeles Kings in 1967/68 and the Minnesota North Stars in 1968-69. His brother Gary had a longer career, playing from 1965/66 to 1979/80 with Toronto, Oakland, Chicago, Vancouver, Minnesota, Washington, and Winnipeg. Brian scored two goals against Gary in one game in 1967.
  • December 19, 1967 - Oakland Seals 1 @ Los Angeles Kings 3 (2 goals)
This game was actually played at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. The Great Western Forum, which would be the Kings' home arena until 1999, did not open until December 30, 1967.

Phil and Tony Esposito

Phil Esposito scored on his brother Tony 25 times in 18 games, by far the most of any of the four players who scored on their brother. Phil scored 2 or more goals against Tony 6 different times, including the first two times he faced him (the first of which was Tony's first ever NHL game); in one of those games, he scored 3 goals. Phil played for the Chicago Blackhawks (1963/64-1966/67), Boston Bruins (1967/68-1975/76) and New York Rangers (1975/76-1980/81), and Tony played for the Montreal Canadiens (1968/69) and Chicago Blackhawks (1969/70-1983/84).
  • December 5, 1968 - Montreal Canadiens 2 @ Boston Bruins 2 (2 goals)
  • December 22, 1968 - Montreal Canadiens 5 @ Boston Bruins 7 (2 goals)
  • February 4, 1970 - Boston Bruins 4 @ Chicago Blackhawks 8
  • February 28, 1970 - Chicago Blackhawks 0 @ Boston Bruins 3
  • December 2, 1970 - Boston Bruins 3 @ Chicago Blackhawks 4 (3 goals)
  • January 23, 1971 - Chicago Blackhawks 2 @ Boston Bruins 6
  • January 15, 1972 - Chicago Blackhawks 2 @ Boston Bruins 4 (2 goals)
  • February 20, 1972 - Boston Bruins 3 @ Chicago Blackhawks 1 (2 goals)
  • January 27, 1973 - Chicago Blackhawks 4 @ Boston Bruins 2
  • November 28, 1973 - Boston Bruins 3 @ Chicago Blackhawks 3
  • January 10, 1974 - Chicago Blackhawks 2 @ Boston Bruins 2
  • March 27, 1976 - New York Rangers 6 @ Chicago Blackhawks 5
  • November 17, 1976 - Chicago Blackhawks 2 @ New York Rangers 3 (2 goals)

  • December 12, 1979 - New York Rangers 5 @ Chicago Blackhawks 2
  • November 5, 1980 - New York Rangers 3 @ Chicago Blackhawks 3
Of the 25 goals, 12 were scored at Chicago Stadium, 10 were scored at Boston Garden, and only 3 were scored at Madison Square Garden.

Mathieu Biron and Martin Biron

The latest brother to score on a brother is Mathieu Biron of the Florida Panthers, who scored against Martin Biron of the Buffalo Sabres in 2003.
  • November 24, 2003 - Buffalo Sabres 1 @ Florida Panthers 2
This game was played at Office Depot Center.

Unusual game sites

This is a list of regular season NHL games (i.e. not including pre-season exhibition games, or playoff games) that were played in an arena that was not the home team's usual rink. Sometimes the games were simply played in the away team's home arena, but most of the time the games are part of an NHL event taking place at neither team's home ice.

As far as I'm aware, I've found all the games that were not played at the home team's usual home arena. If I've missed any, please let me know at ambishop@gmail.com or on Twitter @NHLArenaGoals.

1910s

Quebec had an NHL team, but did not play the first two seasons. Several players who played for Quebec's NHA team (notably Joe Malone and Joe Hall) played for Montreal in 1917/18. This game at the Aréna de Québec allowed Quebec fans to see their favourite players while their team was inactive. Quebec eventually played one season, 1919/20, before moving to Hamilton.
  • December 27, 1919 - Ottawa Senators 2 @ Montreal Canadiens 0 (Ottawa Arena)
Montreal moved to Mount Royal Arena for the 1919/20 season, but the arena was not ready until January 1920. Their first home game of the season was played in Ottawa.

1920s-30s

  • November 29, 1924 - Toronto St. Patricks 1 @ Montreal Canadiens 7 (Montreal Forum)
The Montreal Maroons joined the league for the 1924/25 season and played in the new Montreal Forum. However, the honour of playing the first game at the Forum went to Montreal's original team, the Canadiens, who at this time played at Mount Royal Arena. They joined the Maroons at the Forum for the 1926/27 season.
All the records I can find online, unless they are mistaken, list these two games are as home games for what was actually the road team - New York was the home team at Detroit's arena and vice versa. 1926/27 was Detroit's first season and they played their regular home games at Border Cities Arena in Windsor, Ontario, before Olympia Stadium in Detroit was completed in 1927.
The Ottawa Senators, Chicago Blackhawks, and Pittsburgh Pirates played numerous home games outside of their usual home arenas in the late 1920s and 1930s.

The Senators were the NHL's oldest team. They were formed in the 19th century, long before the NHL or even the NHA existed. However, Ottawa was in financial trouble in the 20s and 30s during the Great Depression. Fans in Ottawa were especially not interested in watching the Senators play against American teams, so occasionally home games were played away from the Ottawa Auditorium. This way, they could collect gate revenues that were much higher than what they would have received in their actual home arena.

Likewise, the Pittsburgh Pirates had financial troubles during this period and played some games away from their home, Duquesne Gardens. Ottawa and Pittsburgh also played several games at sites that had no NHL team - Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and Peace Bridge Arena in Fort Erie, Ontario. The Pirates moved to Philadelphia in 1930 and played one season as the Quakers. Both the Quakers and Senators sat out the 1931/32 season; Ottawa returned to the league before eventually moving to St. Louis in 1934, but disbanded after one season as the Eagles. The Quakers did not return at all.

Chicago played in different arenas as well, because of problems with the availability of their home rinks, Chicago Coliseum and Chicago Stadium. They were unable to use the Coliseum at the end of the 1928/29 season, so they played home games at Peace Bridge Arena, Border Cities Arena, and Olympia Stadium. The new Chicago Stadium was not ready for the beginning of the 1929/30 season, so they played their first games in the old Coliseum. Their first three home games of the 1932/33 season were also played at the Coliseum.

Again, if online records are not mistaken, these two games were home games for the road team. (Online records also switch the days around, so I'm not sure how accurate they are.)

From 1952 to 1956 the Chicago Blackhawks played numerous home games outside of Chicago in other cities in the Midwest. For the most part the games were played in St. Louis; St. Louis Arena had earlier been the home of the St. Louis Eagles in 1934/35, and would later be the home of the St. Louis Blues from 1967 to 1994. Chicago also played at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Ak-sar-ben Coliseum in Omaha, and the Auditorium in St. Paul. The February 25, 1954 game was originally scheduled for Minneapolis but was moved to Omaha.

Two of the 1967 expansion teams played some of their games outside of their usual home arenas in their first year. The Los Angeles Kings' home arena was the Great Western Forum from 1967 to 1999, but it was not yet complete for the beginning of the 1967/68 season. Instead, they played home games at Long Beach Arena and the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena.

At the end of the season, the Spectrum, home of the Philadelphia Flyers, was damaged during a snowstorm. The Flyers played the rest of the season away from home. They played at Maple Leaf Gardens, Madison Square Garden (the afternoon before a New York Rangers home game), and then finished the season at the Colisée de Québec, the future home of the Quebec Nordiques.

During the 1968-69 season, the Oakland Seals played 5 games at the Cow Palace in Daly City, where the Western Hockey League San Francisco Seals had played from 1961-1967 and the San Jose Sharks would play from 1991 to 1993. (Thanks to James Karkoski for the tip about the Seals.)

1970s

The Hartford Whalers played at Hartford Civic Center, from 1975 to 1978 in the WHA and from 1980 to 1997 in the NHL. However, the roof collapsed in Hartford in 1979, so to begin their first NHL season, they played at the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, Massachusetts. All home games from October 19, 1979 to February 3, 1980 were played in Springfield.

From 1992 to 1994 the NHL played numerous "neutral site" games. This was a period of expansion and proposed expansion, so some of the neutral sites were in cities that would later have teams (Reunion Arena in Dallas, America West Arena in Phoenix). Some games were also played in arenas that had been used by defunct or relocated teams (Richfield Coliseum, former home of the Cleveland Barons, OMNI Coliseum, former home of the Atlanta Flames).
The NHL opened the 1997/98 and 1998/99 seasons with two games each in Tokyo, Japan.
